Overview

ASTM A106 Grade B is a grade within ASTM A106/A106M, a specification for seamless carbon-steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. The specification covers pipe suitable for welding, bending, flanging, and similar forming operations within its requirements. “A106B” or “SA106” shorthand should be clarified because ASTM and ASME material designations and code use are not interchangeable in every purchasing context.

The grade name alone does not define size, wall thickness, length, end preparation, testing option, heat treatment, coating, certificate, or project supplementary requirements.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

A106 Grade B is often compared with ASTM A53 Grade B, API 5L Grade B, or other carbon-steel pipe grades. Similar strength levels or chemistry ranges do not make these specifications interchangeable. Manufacturing route, testing, dimensions, marking, and intended applications differ.

Pipe dimensions are normally ordered by NPS and schedule or by stated OD and wall thickness under an applicable dimensional basis. Mill tolerances affect actual ID and weight. The engineer should use the design code and project corrosion allowance rather than treating schedule as a pressure rating.

For low-temperature, sour, hydrogen, high-purity, or impact-sensitive service, additional material selection and testing may be required. A106 Grade B should not be assumed suitable solely because it is seamless.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • Confirm ASTM versus ASME material designation required by the project.
  • State grade, edition, size, wall, length, and end preparation.
  • Verify seamless manufacturing route and heat-number traceability.
  • Check OD, wall thickness, straightness, length, and end bevels.
  • Review chemistry and mechanical properties on the certificate.
  • Confirm hydrostatic or permitted nondestructive electric test records as ordered.
  • Inspect for laps, seams, pits, scale, dents, gouges, and end damage.
  • Define impact, hardness, sour-service, or additional NDE separately when required.
  • Confirm coating and marking do not interfere with welding or traceability.
  • Use verified actual packing weight for shipment planning.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

A106 Grade B pipe is connected to butt-weld fittings, forged fittings, valves, and flanges selected for the same design conditions. Matching a fitting only by NPS can create wall mismatch; the pipe wall and fitting end should be reviewed together.

Weld-neck flange bore should suit the pipe wall. Slip-on flanges use pipe OD and weld detail. Threading A106 pipe may be permitted for some systems, but the remaining wall, thread standard, line class, and code limitations need review.

Is A106 Grade B the same as A53 Grade B?
