Blind Flange Sizes: 4-Inch, 8-Inch, RF, and Pipe Selection

Overview

Blind flange sizes such as 4-inch and 8-inch are nominal pipe-size designations, not complete product descriptions. A 4-inch blind flange and an 8-inch blind flange can be supplied in several pressure classes, flange standards, facings, materials, and dimensional series. Each combination changes thickness, outside diameter, drilling, weight, gasket, and bolting.

“Blind flange RF” means a raised-face blind flange. The RF designation must still be combined with the exact standard, size, class, material, quantity, coating, certificate, and service requirements.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

Blind flanges resist pressure over a solid closed area and can be much heavier than open flanges of the same nominal size. Selecting by pipe size alone can produce the wrong class, bolt pattern, thickness, or facing.

A 4-inch Class 150 blind flange is not dimensionally equivalent to a 4-inch flange from every other rating system. The same applies to 8-inch items. Class, PN, standard, and material must remain together.

Blind flanges are often used for testing and isolation, where incorrect bolting, gasket selection, or temporary installation can create severe stored-energy hazards.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • Do not order from nominal size alone.
  • State standard, class or PN, facing, and material.
  • Confirm the mating flange and gasket system.
  • Verify thickness, OD, hole count, hole diameter, and bolt circle.
  • Check material certificate and heat-number traceability.
  • Confirm stud diameter, quantity, material, and length.
  • Review pressure-temperature suitability for the design condition.
  • Inspect face finish, flatness, dents, and corrosion.
  • Plan lifting for heavy blind flanges.
  • Do not add taps, drains, or lugs without engineering approval.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Four-inch blind flanges are common on branch ends, valve connections, equipment nozzles, and test points. Eight-inch blind flanges serve similar functions at a larger joint scale and usually require more attention to weight and handling.

A supplier may stock standard carbon-steel items while custom alloy, RTJ, large-bore, or special-drilling blind flanges require production. The quotation should distinguish stock availability from technical compliance.

FAQ

What dimensions does a 4-inch blind flange have?

Dimensions depend on the flange standard, class, facing, and edition. Verify against an approved table or supplier drawing.

Is an 8-inch blind flange the same as DN200?

They are commonly corresponding nominal designations, but the exact dimensions depend on the selected standard.

What does RF blind flange mean?

It means the blind flange has a raised gasket seating face.

Can a blind flange be used for pressure testing?

Only when its rating, material, gasket, bolting, installation, and test plan are approved.

How should I choose a blind flange supplier?

Evaluate material traceability, machining, dimensional records, certificates, testing, packing, and experience with the required size and class.

Next Steps

Send the supplier one complete line item for each size. Include standard, class, facing, material, quantity, coating, testing, certificate, gasket, bolting, and delivery terms.
