Blind Flange: Selection, Pressure Boundary, and Inspection

Overview

A blind flange closes a flanged opening without a center bore. It can terminate a line, close a vessel or valve connection, or provide an access point that can be opened later. Because the full pressure load acts on the solid plate, the correct standard, rating, material, facing, bolting, gasket, and installation procedure all matter.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

A blind flange is part of the pressure boundary. Incorrect thickness, material, facing, or bolt loading can cause leakage or deformation. The closed end also receives pressure thrust, so the adjoining piping support and nozzle design may need review.

A blind flange should not be selected only by outside diameter and bolt-hole count. Those measurements can look similar across different standards or ratings. The complete designation must identify the dimensional standard, size, rating, facing, and material.

Methods, Parameters, or Process

Use the following parameters when specifying a blind flange.

ParameterRequired decision
Standard and editionThe dimensional and rating standard required by the project
SizeNPS, DN, or equipment nozzle designation
Pressure ratingASME class, PN, or project rating
FacingRF, FF, RTJ, or another approved facing
MaterialFull specification and grade
Corrosion allowance or liningState when required by design
Tapped holes or special machiningProvide an approved drawing
Coating and preservationKeep gasket faces free of damaging coating
InspectionState dimensional, material, NDE, PMI, and certification requirements

For a standard blind flange, verify flange thickness, outside diameter, bolt circle, bolt-hole size, facing geometry, and surface finish against the applicable standard. For a custom blind or spectacle component, require an approved design drawing and do not label it as standard without evidence.

Verification note: pressure-temperature suitability depends on material group, rating class, temperature, and the governing design rules. Confirm it from the contract-required standard edition.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • Verify the complete flange designation against the line class or equipment datasheet.
  • Check the heat number and material grade against the MTR.
  • Measure thickness, outside diameter, bolt circle, hole diameter, and facing.
  • Inspect the gasket seating surface for radial scratches, dents, corrosion, or coating.
  • Confirm any tapped holes, lifting points, vents, drains, or special machining from the approved drawing.
  • Review flatness and visible distortion.
  • Confirm gasket, bolting, lubricant, and tightening procedure are compatible with the joint design.
  • Protect large blind flanges during lifting and storage.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Blind flanges are used on pipe ends, valve ends, pressure-vessel nozzles, pump connections, manifolds, and test points. They allow future access but require a controlled isolation and depressurization procedure before removal.

They also appear in hydrotest arrangements and temporary construction closures. A temporary blind must still be engineered for the test pressure and restrained loads; it should not be improvised from unverified plate.

FAQ

What is the difference between a blind flange and a spectacle blind?

A blind flange closes a flanged end. A spectacle blind is a line blank installed between two flanges and can be rotated between open and closed positions.

Can a blind flange be made from plate?

Some project standards permit plate-made components, while other applications require forgings or a specified product form. The purchase specification and governing code must decide.

Does a blind flange need a gasket?

A bolted blind-flange joint normally uses the gasket type specified for the mating flange and service. The joint design, not habit, controls the gasket.

Can a lower-class blind flange be installed if the bolt pattern fits?

No decision should be based on bolt fit alone. Rating, thickness, facing, material, and pressure-temperature suitability must all match the approved design.

Next Steps

Provide the supplier with the line class or nozzle datasheet, flange standard, size, rating, facing, material, quantity, and inspection requirements. Add a drawing for any tapping, lifting hole, coating limit, or nonstandard thickness.

Blind Flange vs Spectacle Blind: Which Isolation Fits?

In blind flange vs spectacle blind selection, the key difference is location and operating function. A blind flange closes the end of a flanged opening. A spectacle blind sits between two flanges and can be rotated between a solid blank and an open spacer...
