A lap-joint flange and a slip-on flange both have bores larger than the connected pipe, but they are not the same. A slip-on flange is welded directly to the pipe and provides its own gasket face. A lap-joint flange is a loose backing flange used with a stub end or lapped pipe end that provides the gasket face.

The lap-joint backing flange can rotate before bolting, while a welded slip-on flange becomes fixed to the pipe. This difference affects alignment, material selection, welding, corrosion exposure, and inspection.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

Confusing the two can result in a missing stub end, wrong bore, wrong facing, or an unusable assembly. A lap-joint backing flange alone cannot seal the pipe. A slip-on flange should not be placed behind a stub end unless the design specifically calls for that arrangement.

Lap-joint systems can reduce expensive alloy usage because the wetted stub end and non-wetted backing flange may use different approved materials. Slip-on flanges use one flange material and are welded directly to the pipe.

Both joints require rating, gasket, bolting, alignment, and service review. Neither should be selected only on initial cost.

Lap-joint assemblies are useful for alloy piping, lined systems, and spools that need bolt-hole rotation. Slip-on flanges are common in utility and process services where direct fillet-weld attachment is approved.

For valves and equipment, lap-joint clearance can be limited by body geometry, while slip-on welding can affect alignment. Check the actual assembly drawing.
