Why It Matters for Pipe Components

Flanges, fittings, and valves are ordered by nominal size, but weld preparation and flow area depend on actual dimensions. Confusing NPS with measured OD can result in the wrong flange bore, fitting, or valve end.

NPS, DN, outside diameter, wall thickness, and schedule should be kept as separate fields in purchasing and inspection records.

Do not convert NPS to DN by treating either value as an exact physical diameter. Use the standard equivalence table approved by the project. Also confirm whether the pipe standard and flange standard use compatible nominal designations.

For weld neck flanges, state the pipe schedule or exact bore. For socket weld and slip-on flanges, state the pipe OD and wall. For valves, verify the end standard and bore separately.

Verification note: actual pipe dimensions and schedule tables must be taken from the project-required pipe standard and edition.

  • Record NPS or DN exactly as shown on the line list.
  • Record actual OD and specified wall thickness.
  • Confirm pipe material and dimensional standard.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Nominal size connects the bill of materials across pipe, elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, valves, gaskets, and bolting. It is useful for system organization, but actual manufacturing and fit-up depend on dimensional standards.

Large-bore and thin-wall projects deserve extra attention because a small bore mismatch can create a significant internal step or welding problem.

Is NPS 2 pipe exactly 2 inches in diameter?

NPS is a nominal designation, not a direct statement that every measured diameter equals 2 inches.

Is DN the exact metric conversion of NPS?

DN is also nominal. Use the approved equivalence table rather than a simple arithmetic conversion.

Does schedule change pipe outside diameter?

Within a given pipe size series, schedule commonly changes wall thickness and therefore inside diameter. Confirm the applicable pipe standard.

Why does a flange quotation ask for pipe schedule?
