Slip-On Pipe Flanges: Materials, Welding, and Inspection

Overview

Slip-on pipe flanges slide over the outside of the pipe and are attached with fillet welds according to the approved joint detail. Common search terms include slip flange, slip weld flange, weldable flange, and carbon steel slip-on flange. The controlled product name should identify the actual flange type and standard.

The pipe OD, flange bore, pipe position, facing, class, material, and weld detail must be compatible. A flange that slides over the pipe is not automatically a standard slip-on flange.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

The annular clearance can make alignment easier but also allows eccentric fit-up. Poor centering changes weld size and flange position. Excessive pipe projection can interfere with the gasket seating area, while insufficient projection can create the wrong internal joint.

Material route matters. A forged carbon-steel slip-on flange, plate flange, stainless flange, and cast flange can follow different specifications. Colour or appearance does not establish material compliance.

The joint is sensitive to welding distortion and face damage. Final inspection should occur after welding and any required heat treatment.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • Verify that the project permits slip-on flanges.
  • State pipe OD and wall thickness.
  • Confirm bore clearance before production welding.
  • Use a controlled centering and setback method.
  • Protect the flange face from spatter and grinding.
  • Inspect both required welds where the approved detail uses two fillets.
  • Check face alignment after welding.
  • Verify material traceability and coating restrictions.
  • Do not substitute a plate flange or lap-joint flange without approval.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Slip-on flanges are common in utility and process piping where their connection is permitted. Carbon-steel versions are widely available, while stainless and alloy versions require appropriate welding, cleaning, and contamination controls.

A slip-on flange differs from a lap-joint backing flange, which remains loose and works with a stub end. It also differs from a socket-weld flange, which has an internal shoulder.

FAQ

What is a slip weld flange?

It is usually informal wording for a slip-on flange that is welded to pipe. Confirm the exact product.

Is a slip-on flange weldable?

Yes when made from a suitable material and installed under an approved welding procedure.

Does a slip-on flange use one or two welds?

Many common details use internal and external fillet welds, but the project drawing and WPS control the joint.

Is carbon steel slip-on the same as A105?

Not automatically. The order must state the material specification and manufacturing route.

Can it replace a weld-neck flange?

Only after engineering review of service, loads, code, welding, and inspection.
