Overview

BSP and NPT are different pipe-thread systems. NPT is an American tapered pipe thread covered by ASME B1.20.1. BSP commonly refers to parallel BSPP/G threads or tapered BSPT/R-series threads associated with ISO systems. They differ in profile, pitch combinations, diameters, designations, and sealing arrangements.

BSP vs NPT should be treated as a compatibility question. Parts that start to screw together are not necessarily suitable for pressure service.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

NPT uses a 60-degree thread form, while BSP forms are based on a 55-degree profile. Pitch can also differ by nominal size. These differences change flank contact, engagement, and load distribution. Partial engagement may damage both parts and create an unreliable seal.

BSPP is parallel and generally uses a separate seal. BSPT uses tapered and related mating forms intended for thread-based sealing under the applicable system. NPT is tapered and commonly assembled with an approved sealant.

Imported valves and instruments often use BSP ports, while North American piping often uses NPT. A correctly specified adapter is safer than mixed-thread assembly.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Threaded elbows, tees, couplings, and forged fittings should be ordered with the exact system. Valves may have BSP on one market version and NPT on another even when the body looks identical.

Instrumentation often introduces BSPP ports with bonded washers, while process piping may use NPT. A transition adapter must be rated for the full pressure and temperature range.

For gas service, use only approved components and sealants. Mixed threads are not an acceptable adaptation method.
