Galvanized Flanges: Coating, Threads, Welding, and Inspection

Overview

A galvanized flange is a steel or iron flange protected with a zinc coating. The term does not identify the base material, flange standard, pressure class, facing, or coating process. The RFQ should state whether hot-dip galvanizing, electroplating, mechanical zinc coating, or another system is required.

Gasket faces, weld ends, threads, bores, and bolt holes may need masking, oversizing, post-treatment, or repair according to the design and coating specification.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

Zinc thickness can change thread fit and bolt-hole clearance. Galvanizing can also create runs, ash, bare spots, or trapped solution in poor component geometry. High-strength steels may require review for embrittlement risk and process suitability.

Welding galvanized material releases zinc fumes and damages the coating near the weld. Fabrication sequence, removal, ventilation, repair, and worker safety must be planned.

Zinc is not compatible with every chemical or temperature. Galvanic interaction with other metals and the external environment should be assessed.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • State base material and flange standard.
  • Define galvanizing process and coating requirements.
  • Approve masking for faces, threads, and weld areas.
  • Check hole clearance and thread fit after coating.
  • Inspect coating continuity and handling damage.
  • Confirm repair material and method.
  • Keep wet galvanized parts ventilated and separated during storage.
  • Plan coating removal and repair around field welds.
  • Verify service compatibility with zinc.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Galvanized flanges appear in water, utility, structural, support, fire-protection, and outdoor systems. The coating does not change the pressure rating of the base flange.

For threaded or bolted assemblies, mating parts and fasteners should be selected with coating thickness and galvanic compatibility in mind.

FAQ

Does galvanized mean stainless steel?

No. Galvanizing usually means a zinc coating on another base metal.

Can gasket faces be hot-dip galvanized?

They are often masked or machined after coating, but the project specification controls the requirement.

Can galvanized flanges be welded?

They can be welded only under an approved procedure with coating removal, fume control, cleaning, and repair.

Does galvanizing increase pressure rating?

No. Rating comes from the base flange standard, material, class, and temperature.

What is white rust?

It is a zinc corrosion product that can form when newly galvanized surfaces remain wet with poor ventilation.

Next Steps
