Overview

A full-face gasket extends across most or all of the flange face and includes bolt holes. A ring gasket sits inside the bolt circle and has no bolt holes. The correct choice depends on the flange facing, gasket standard, joint design, material, pressure, temperature, fluid, and assembly procedure.

The words full face and ring describe gasket geometry, not the gasket material. Either form can be made from several nonmetallic or composite materials, subject to the applicable standard and service limits.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

Using the wrong gasket geometry can prevent proper seating, shift the gasket during assembly, or load the flange in an unintended way. Full-face gaskets are often associated with flat-face flanges, especially where reducing flange bending or protecting brittle or nonmetallic components is important. Ring gaskets are commonly used with raised-face steel flanges.

The gasket must fit the actual bore, raised face, bolt circle, and flange size. A catalogue gasket labelled for one nominal size can still be wrong if the standard or class differs.

Material selection is equally important. Chemical compatibility, creep, relaxation, fire safety, emissions, temperature, pressure, surface finish, and required seating stress should be reviewed by the responsible engineer or gasket supplier.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • Confirm flange standard, size, class or PN, and facing.
  • Specify gasket material and construction, not only geometry.
  • Check ID does not intrude into the flow path.
  • Check OD or bolt holes do not interfere with assembly.
  • Inspect gasket condition, shelf life, cleanliness, and packaging.
  • Inspect flange face finish, corrosion, scratches, and flatness.
  • Use new gaskets unless an approved procedure explicitly permits reuse.
  • Follow the approved tightening pattern and bolt-load method.
  • Do not stack gaskets to compensate for alignment or gap problems.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Flange joints on pipe, valves, pumps, strainers, and equipment use gasket geometry that must match the mating faces. Nonmetallic and plastic flanges may have lower allowable bolt loads than steel flanges, making gasket compressibility and torque control especially important.

A line blank, spacer, or spectacle blind changes the joint stack and may affect stud length and gasket requirements. Both sides of the inserted component require the correct sealing arrangement.

FAQ

Is a ring gasket the same as an RTJ gasket?

No. Ring gasket can mean a flat annular gasket, while RTJ usually refers to a metallic ring-joint gasket used in a machined groove.

Can a full-face gasket be used on a raised-face flange?

Only when the joint design and component requirements permit it. Do not assume the combination is correct.

Why do full-face gaskets have bolt holes?

The gasket extends across the flange face, so holes are needed for the bolting.

Does gasket color identify the material?

Not reliably. Use manufacturer markings, certificates, and technical data.

Can two thin gaskets replace one thick gasket?

Normally no. Stacking can increase relaxation and leakage risk unless specifically engineered.
