Why It Matters for Pipe Components

The sealing function and the bolting function may be carried by different parts of the assembly. The formed pipe end or lap can contact the gasket, while the backing flange transfers bolt load. If the lap geometry, flange bore, contact radius, or material combination is wrong, the assembly may not seat correctly.

Some suppliers use “Vanstone flange,” “lap joint flange,” “loose flange,” and “backing flange” as if they are identical. In other markets, these terms describe different manufacturing details. If a flared pipe end is formed from thin-wall material, require the supplier to state the minimum finished wall, corner radius, forming method, and inspection plan. If a separate stub end is welded to the pipe, treat it as a lap-joint assembly and verify the flange/stub-end match.

A Vanstone assembly may be attractive where the expensive corrosion-resistant material is kept in the wetted end while the backing ring uses a different material. That is an engineering option, not a universal recommendation. Temperature, corrosion, galvanic interaction, fire exposure, coating, and mechanical loads must be reviewed.

Verification required: no single universal Vanstone flange standard or dimensional table should be assumed from the trade name. Confirm the project drawing and governing standard before publication or purchase.

  • Require a dimensioned cross-section instead of relying on the product name.
  • Confirm pipe OD, wall thickness, material, and forming tolerance.
  • Verify the finished lap or flare is free from cracks, splits, sharp thinning, and distortion.
  • Check that the backing flange rotates freely before final assembly.
  • Confirm the backing-flange bore supports the lap without excessive clearance.
  • Inspect the gasket contact surface for flatness and damage.
  • Verify material traceability for the wetted end and backing flange separately.
  • Review forming, welding, heat-treatment, and NDE procedures when applicable.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Vanstone-type assemblies may be used on corrosion-resistant piping, thin-wall stainless systems, lined pipe, ventilation or duct systems, water treatment equipment, and custom fabricated connections. The rotating flange can help installers align bolt holes where field orientation is uncertain.

For valves and equipment nozzles, verify whether the formed end provides the required gasket seating geometry. For reducers, elbows, and fabricated fittings, confirm that forming or welding does not reduce the required wall below the approved limit. For plastic, composite, or lined systems, use the manufacturer’s qualified joint design rather than transferring metal-pipe assumptions.

The terms overlap in some markets, but they are not safe substitutes without a drawing. A lap-joint flange normally works with a defined stub end, while Vanstone may describe a formed or flared pipe-end assembly.

The formed end or stub end normally provides the wetted surface, but actual exposure depends on the cross-section and gasket arrangement.

Can the backing flange use a different material?
