Selection focuses not only on pressure and dimensions but also on drainability, cleanability, surface finish, weld quality, gasket compatibility, and avoidance of product-trapping crevices.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

A mechanically strong fitting can still be unsuitable for hygienic service if the internal surface is rough, the weld is poorly blended, the gasket intrudes into the bore, or the geometry traps product. These conditions can make cleaning difficult and increase contamination risk.

Sanitary systems also use tube sizing and special connection profiles that may not match ordinary industrial pipe fittings. Mixing ferrules, clamps, gaskets, and tube dimensions from incompatible systems can create sealing and alignment problems.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Sanitary fittings connect to sanitary valves, pumps, tanks, instruments, filters, and heat exchangers. Every connection should preserve the hygienic bore and cleaning path. Valve seats, gasket materials, ferrule profiles, and surface finish should be coordinated with adjacent fittings.

Ordinary industrial flanges may be used at utility or equipment boundaries, but the transition should be designed to avoid dead legs and cleaning problems.

What is the difference between sanitary pipe and ordinary pipe?

Is 316L always required?

No. Material selection depends on product chemistry, cleaning agents, temperature, corrosion risk, and industry requirements. 316L is common but not universal.

What does surface finish mean?
