Overview
A BSPP thread is a British Standard Pipe Parallel thread, commonly designated with the letter G. Both mating threads are parallel. Under the ISO 228-1 system, these fastening threads are not intended to create a pressure-tight joint by thread interference alone. The connection normally seals at a washer, bonded seal, O-ring, gasket, or defined seating surface.
A BSPP thread chart must identify its governing standard and edition. Nominal size does not equal the measured major diameter, and a chart should not be used to force-fit an unknown connection.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components
BSPP ports are common on valves, instruments, pumps, hydraulic components, and international equipment. Leakage often occurs when an installer applies tapered-thread assumptions to a parallel joint. Extra tape cannot correct a missing washer, damaged seat, incorrect adapter, or incompatible port.
BSPP and BSPT use related 55-degree thread forms, but BSPP is parallel while BSPT uses tapered pressure-tight arrangements. NPT uses a different profile and dimensional system. Parts may engage for a few turns without forming a controlled joint.
For procurement, G 1/2 is more precise than “half-inch British thread,” but the port geometry and sealing method should still appear on the drawing.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges
BSPP adapters connect valves and instruments to tube fittings, hoses, manifolds, or pipe systems. The adapter must match both the G thread and sealing style. Some male ends use a bonded seal under a shoulder; others seal against a machined face.
Industrial fittings may combine BSPP on one end and NPT, BSPT, metric, or compression connections on the other. Each end should be listed independently.
For gas or hazardous fluids, thread form alone does not confirm approval. Verify component rating, seal material, leakage requirements, listing, and local rules.
