A 1/2 BSP thread is not one complete technical designation. It can refer to G 1/2 parallel BSPP thread under ISO 228 or to an R, Rc, or Rp half-inch pressure-tight thread arrangement under ISO 7. The exact designation controls taper, mating form, gauging, and sealing.

The nominal half-inch size is not the direct measured thread diameter. Identification should combine marking, pitch, taper, profile, controlled dimensions, and the location where the joint is designed to seal.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

A supplier may interpret “1/2 BSP” as BSPP while the customer expects BSPT. The parts can have the same general profile family but use different geometry and sealing methods. A parallel G port usually needs a washer, O-ring, gasket, or seat. A pressure-tight R/Rc/Rp arrangement seals according to its thread design and approved jointing method.

Confusion with 1/2 NPT creates another risk. NPT uses a 60-degree profile and a different dimensional system. Partial engagement is not evidence of compatibility.
