Types of Gaskets for Pipe Flanges and Valves

Overview

The main types of gaskets used in industrial piping include compressed sheet gaskets, elastomeric full-face gaskets, spiral-wound gaskets, metal-jacketed gaskets, grooved metal gaskets with facing layers, ring-joint gaskets, and electrical isolation gasket kits. Each construction seals through a different combination of compressibility, recovery, surface contact, and bolt load.

A gasket should be selected as part of the complete flange joint. Fluid, pressure, temperature, flange standard, facing, surface finish, available bolt load, fire requirements, electrical isolation, and maintenance practice all affect suitability.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

Using the wrong gasket geometry can prevent correct seating or concentrate load on an unsuitable area. A full-face gasket and a ring gasket are not interchangeable by appearance alone. Raised-face, flat-face, tongue-and-groove, male-and-female, and ring-type-joint flanges require compatible gasket arrangements.

Material compatibility is equally important. Elastomers can swell or harden. Fibers and binders can degrade at temperature. Graphite can be unsuitable in some oxidizing or contamination-sensitive environments. Metallic gaskets require adequate flange stiffness, alignment, surface condition, and bolt load.

Historic gasket descriptions may include asbestos. New supply and removal practices are controlled by current laws, owner rules, and health procedures. A buyer should request verified non-asbestos composition when that is the project requirement.

Methods, Parameters, or Process

Start with service and flange data, then select a gasket construction and material combination.

Elastomeric full faceFlat-face and low-pressure systems where permittedElastomer grade, hardness, holes, aging, fluid compatibility
Spiral woundRaised-face or specified flat-face jointsWinding and filler materials, inner/outer rings, standard dimensions
Metal jacketedHeat exchangers and selected flange arrangementsCore, jacket material, surface finish, required load
Grooved metal with layersHigh-integrity joints with suitable flange stiffnessCore material, facing layer, groove geometry, bolt load

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • Identify the flange standard, size, class or PN, facing, and surface finish.
  • Define fluid composition, operating and upset temperature, pressure, and cycling.
  • Confirm gasket construction, dimensions, thickness, and material specification.
  • Check chemical compatibility using project-approved data.
  • Verify whether fire-safe, low-emission, oxygen-clean, food-grade, or other special requirements apply.
  • Inspect for moisture damage, delamination, damaged windings, bent rings, scratches, and contamination.
  • Do not reuse a gasket unless a qualified procedure explicitly permits it.
  • Confirm studs, nuts, lubricant, tightening sequence, and target load as one assembly system.
  • Keep gasket storage flat, dry, clean, and protected from UV or ozone where relevant.
  • Request composition declarations when asbestos-free or restricted-substance compliance is required.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Pipe flanges, valve ends, strainers, pumps, and equipment nozzles may use different facing geometries even at the same nominal size and class. The gasket list should therefore reference the exact joint rather than only the line size.

For plastic, glass-lined, or cast-iron components, excessive gasket stress can damage the flange. For RTJ systems, ring and groove dimensions and hardness relationships are critical. Insulation kits add sleeves and washers that can change stud length and assembly behavior.

FAQ

What is the best gasket for a pipe flange?

There is no universal best type. Selection depends on fluid, temperature, pressure, facing, bolt load, flange stiffness, and project requirements.

Can a full-face gasket be used on a raised-face flange?

Only when the joint design and manufacturer or project specification permit it. Do not assume geometry is interchangeable.

Are spiral-wound gaskets metallic gaskets?

They are composite gaskets made with metal winding and filler. ASME B16.20 covers defined metallic gasket constructions within its scope.

Can an old gasket be reused?

Normally a removed gasket should be replaced unless a qualified and approved procedure specifically allows reuse.

How can a buyer confirm a gasket is asbestos-free?

Request the manufacturer’s material declaration, product data, batch identification, and any required regulatory documentation.

Next Steps

Send the gasket supplier the complete flange and service datasheet. Require a product data sheet, material declaration, dimensional confirmation, storage limits, and assembly recommendations.
