Overview

Raised face and flat face describe the gasket-contact geometry of a flange. A raised face concentrates gasket seating on an annular area inside the bolt circle. A flat face extends the machined contact surface across the full flange face. The correct facing is determined by the flange standard, material, equipment design, gasket system, and project specification.

RF flange and FF flange are not interchangeable descriptions. The facing must be included in the purchase order because the same nominal size and class can be supplied with different face options where the governing standard permits them.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

Facing affects gasket contact area, bolt-load distribution, flange rotation, and the risk of overstressing brittle components. A raised-face steel flange connected directly to a flat-face gray-iron component can create an unfavorable loading condition unless the joint is specifically designed and approved.

Gasket selection must match the facing. A ring gasket located inside the bolts is common with raised faces. A full-face gasket extends across the flange and includes bolt holes. These descriptions do not by themselves define gasket material, thickness, pressure rating, or service suitability.

Inspection should include face finish, flatness, corrosion, dents, scratches, coating, and dimensional compliance. A correct flange with a damaged seating area can still leak.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • State RF or FF explicitly in the RFQ and drawing.
  • Confirm that both mating components are compatible.
  • Specify gasket type, material, thickness, dimensions, and service limits.
  • Inspect the complete seating surface for radial scratches and impact damage.
  • Keep coating and rust preventive off the seating area unless approved.
  • Check flange alignment and parallelism before tightening.
  • Use the approved bolting, lubricant, and tightening procedure.
  • Do not machine a face from RF to FF or the reverse without design approval.
  • Confirm any special rules for gray iron, plastic, lined, or equipment flanges.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Steel weld-neck, slip-on, blind, threaded, and socket-weld flanges can be supplied with specified facings within the limits of the governing product standard. Valve body flanges, pump nozzles, strainers, and cast equipment may impose additional facing restrictions.

For plastic and lined piping, the sealing face can be part of a molded or lined system rather than a conventional machined metal flange. The gasket and torque procedure should follow the component manufacturer and project design.

Do not assume it is acceptable. The combination requires review of material, gasket, standard, and equipment limitations.
